Drum Roll Please......

I got the string stars done!!!!! Isn't it great! It is about 62 x 62. I"m wondering if I should leave it as is and just have the quilt this size, or if I should add really wide borders (10") and then it would fit my bed. If I do that I"m thinking either brown or red. (Oh and the pics are really washed out. The colors are much richer in real life and the background shirtings are more tan. Only place I could get a pic was in Jenna's room on her closet door tonight which is in the basement).

What do you think? I"ll add a poll to the top of my blog to add to the fun!

  1. I personally think that pale yellow would be good. :)

  2. Absolutely beautiful. I'm envious. I haven't tackled one yet. It's on my bucket list.

  4. This is such a pretty quilt. One of the nicest strings I have seen. If you use the blue or red binding it will draw the eye to the binding away from the stars. Red and blue are amounbg my favorite colors, but in this case if it were me, I would use the brown which would blend in with overall quilt and keep eyes on the important part. Sarahe4e

  5. I love your stars!! and the different values for the background really add to it.. I am sorry i can't answer your boarder question cause I would only make more of the stars to fit the bed and have no boarder at all just a thin binding.

  6. That's lovely!! I voted for a blue border... but if green could play well with it, I'd select that in a heartbeat! ;)

  7. Wonderful! Not only do I think you should add wide borders, but I think you should add some applique to that border! That would be spectacular!

  8. It's Beautiful!! I really, really like it.

  9. I would add a border, it is so pretty, would look wonderful on your bed.

  10. I would leave the edges uneven and bind it that way. It's a little bit time consuming, but not any worse than adding borders!

  14. I say go for red, It'll be stunning and then you can use it as a bed quilt. Word verification is bravo, lol.

  15. What a lovely quilt! I just love the colors you have used. I would consider extending the stars and adding additional beige triangles where needed so all the stars are finished completely. In the beige triangles along the edges I would then add some applique! But either way you finish it, I think you will have a stunning quilt!
    Well done!

  16. Hurray Dawn - it's absolutely beeeautiful. I'll let you into a little secret.....I'm not a big fan of string quilts. BUT this one is a wonderful exception. I clicked to have a better look at the fabrics and love them all. I think you just have time to get in quilted for my birthday - LOL !!!

  18. It's too nice not to put on your bed, so I'd say add borders.

  19. Oh, that's so pretty. I have no idea what I would do about a border, but will be looking forward to seeing what you decide.

  20. Oh me likey!!!!! But a little sad . . . my stash got packed up this weekend - now I must wait to copy you *s*

  21. MOSAIC - GORGEOUS. I would go nuts sewing all those strips together. That's what I did over weekend just trying to make sets for 9 patch. I vote for row of shirting of some sort to finish off the design then whatever color moves ya. Gorgeous, Kiddo (perfect colors and design for Oklahoma territory)

  22. So difficult..love the quilt as is. If you did add a boarder I would do a beige and blue to keep the strippy theme going.

  23. I'd finish off the stars that are on the outside edges...I don't like half blocks like that. Finish them and make the outside blocks in the background colors so the stars are floating. It is a rich looking quilt..very lovely. I'll have to cheak your archives to see if there are any patterns you used this from...I love it!

  24. I would continue the stars out until they are bed size. They are fantaastic. If I really had to choose a border it would definately be red
Can't wait to see it finished
    Cheers

  25. what do I have to say??? omg...I'm jealous!
Dawn the quilt is simply spectacular and that is putting it mildly!!
IF you want to use it as a quilt for your bed then I guess I'd vote for a wide border- maybe with some applique?? But then maybe not-wouldn't want to take away from the stars...all that work executed so perfectly. So- if bordering go with the brown or turkey red. Or just send it on over to NY, I'd take really REALLY good care of it!
Now I want to make something- anything!! lol.

  26. This is so beautiful! You know, you could put on one 4" and one 6" border for even more interest.

This summer, for the first time, I put one of my own quilts on my own bed, and you can't even know how much I enjoy it. I think you should do that for yourself with this one. *S*

  27. Tooooo kewllllll! By all means, add wide borders and USE it! It's unique and a one-of-a-kind!

You said it was washed out, so it's hard to suggest a color, but I saw some blue/turquise jumping out that would be a good narrow accent. I like the idea of some simple applique also. Nothing too fancy.

  28. Hey, maybe you could put on several narrow zig zag strips that follow the angles created by the stars...more solid than your star prints...then put on a wider border to straighten it all out, maybe in a washed out red or red-brown.

  29. It sure would be nice to have it bigger but ten inch borders are pretty big. Is it possible to add more stars first? The colors you used are great. I wouldn't mind having one for myself.

  30. Wonderful!! I think a light border, so the stars shine even more.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Just fabulous Dawn!

  32. What a fancy looking quilt...I vote for a red border, and maybe yellowish/brownish binding!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm with Betweens...I would vote for making more blocks so thatit is big enough for the bed (great use for it!) and not add a border at all. This is one of the nicest string quilts I have seen. Lovely work!

  34. me again, I clicked to see the quilt larger and scrolled to the bottom...I noticed the brown wood in the photo that is behind where you hung the quilt. That brown looked like a good border option if making more stars isn't a good one, so I'll vote in the poll for brown. This is really a wonderful looking quilt. It should be displayed to be viewed daily.

  37. Dawn I love it just the way it is and it would look great bound with the scalloped effect, but if I were to add a border go RED!

  38. Dawn, What a beautiful quilt you have made. You have inspired me to do a string quilt.
I think a brown border would frame your stars nicely.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love it! I would vote for a wide tan border with lots of quilting!

  44. Georgous and all those scraps. Bonnie would be mighty proud of you. Love the use of the shirtings for the lights, I think you should finish off the blocks and fill in with the shirtings all around and then a darker broun or blue border. Love it.
