About a year or two ago I shared a quilt top I rescued from my Aunt's garbage pile. She thought it was the ugliest thing she ever saw. I LOVED it! It was all hand pieced and was made by my uncle's grandmother. So I took it home in the hopes of getting it hand quilted. Sadly a few months later my aunt died, but I still had this wonderful top.

I just recently got it hand quilted by some Mennonite women who live not to far from me. I got it back and washed it up and look at it! It is awesome or what!

I am so glad I have this beautiful quilt from her. Now to get it documented and labeled before I forget what little details my aunt remembered!

It's spectacular - I know you're excited that you rescued it.
ReplyDeleteStunning! It absolutely amazing, isn't it, how the same thing can be "ugly" to one person and "beautiful" to the next. That quilt is not only wonderful, but it has a rescue story as well as a who made it story - perfect!!!
ReplyDeletelucky you! great quilt
ReplyDeletewill just make you smile everytime you look at it.

Dawn it is absolutely incredible...what a treasure!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an awesome treasure! I love this quilt too.
ReplyDeleteI *adore* this quilt! Love, love, love it! Thank you so much for posting so many pictures of the wonderful fabrics.
ReplyDeleteI have a considerable collection of "newspaper patterns" from the 30s and 40s. This one seems to be a compilation of two different patterns. I have cobbled together a pattern of sorts, based on a 6" block, but if you have any interest in creating a pattern sized and based on your quilt, I'd be first in line to purchase it! Thanks again for sharing such a treasure.
That is an awesome quilt! How fortunate that you were able to rescue it. It will now be appreciated for it's beauty.
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure to have! I love it...not "ugly" at all. I'm so glad you were able to rescue it. I have an old star quilt found in a garbage bag at a garage sale in Texas years ago. You've inspired me to get it pressed and get it ready to be in the light of day! Thanks my friend!

ReplyDeleteI am so sorry your Aunt didn't see the beautiful finished quilt. What a treasure. You did good rescuing that one.
ReplyDeleteyou know what they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure. What a treasure. Obviously, your aunt was not a quilter or she would have recognized and appreciated the work in it even if she did not care for the colors or fabrics congrats for being at the right place at the right time to rescue this beauty!
ReplyDeleteThat is fantastic! How lucky you were able to save this beauty!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure! I am just in love with those pink polka dots!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure!
ReplyDeleteI so love it too, glad you had it quilted and can now enjoy this wonderful quilt.

What a treasure you have ..... your quilt is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful quilt! It is such a treasure.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great find -- it turned out beautifully! My mother gave me an "ugly" quilt top for Christmas one year -- I really hated that thing. Then I had it quilted and it's just beautiful now. One man's trash is another man's treasure!
ReplyDeleteHow lucky that you were there to rescue the quilt - hasn't it turned out beautiful and so good you know the history of it.
ReplyDeleteso glad to hear there are "rescuers" smart enough to realize the find they have. It is , indeed, a beautiful scrappy quilt. congratulations on getting it hand quilted, too...there are very few of us handquilters left.
ReplyDeleteWow.. your Aunt must have had bad eyes ... it is a beauty!!!! :o)) You must be thrilled to have it ... and what a wonderful memory of your Aunt..:o)
ReplyDeleteThank YOU for rescuing this lovely quilt! It IS a beauty, and a good example of fabrics of that time.
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful story, Dawn! I'm sorry though, for the loss of your Aunt. I'm so glad that the two of you got to share this quilt.
ReplyDeleteOh My Goodness. I love, love, love this quilt. I'm so glad you rescued it from the trash. It is a true treasure.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you were able to rescue this quilt. At least it was not used as a dogbed or something equally smelly. And lucky you to have Mennonite handquilters handy.
ReplyDeleteGood job...and that is one big quilt!
XOXOXO Subee
