A bit of halloween and sewing antiques

A bit of a mixed post today! I finally started playing with my Blommin Horrors version of Tonya's quilt. I'm actually going to make 2, one for a friend of Holly's who thinks Halloween should be all year long and then one for me! Here is my first version. I found the dark background is really hard to have things show up on it, but of course I like darker colors - so I"m going to make it work! As you can tell I'm still playing, but I think I have it the way I want it now. So sometime this weekend I should get it all fused down. I want this to be a quick project so I"m not hand applique'ing!

I saw so many wonderful sewing baskets at the antique store on my trip. Oh there were one or two I so wanted to buy and bring home. But they of course were priced pretty high, so I resisted! But I did get some pics! And there was a really fun old treadle machine - but I took these pics with my phone and they were really the first pics I've taken using it so they came out really blurry - but you get the idea!

Blooming Horrors is adorable!

I would have found it hard to resist those antique beauties, as well. Sigh! Thanks for sharing pictures. :-)

ooooh, (or should I say wwoooooh) marvelous halloween bouquet. That foot fabric is an absolute hoot. I actually found it difficult to use a dark purple background as well, for the same reason. your drawing is fabulous - just like it should be for this project. you're doing great.

that treadle machine is gorgeous.

Dawn, I love your Halloween quilt! Those sewing boxes are to die for! The treadle machine is beautiful with its curved front. I would have wanted all of them too!

I've got one of those sewing stands with the flip up sides. It's in the basement, waiting to be refinished. Come to think of it, there's a treadle machine too, but it's not in good condition.

They are charming. The first one is a "Martha Washington" style. I think perhaps because of the side storage sections. I saw one sold at an auction once, and the ring man didn't realize the two side lids on top flipped up. He picked it up, and kind of grabbed it, and let it slide down through his hands, probably thinking the lip of the top would stop it. You should have seen the look on his face when it just kept going right to the concrete floor and the legs snapped off it. Whoops!
The second one is a variety that was given as a premium in the 'teens and 20's with a furniture purchase . . . usually with an ice box. The last one is really a smoking stand, unless there were spool pins in it. Usually, they held a humidor inside, an ash try on top, and the door was equipped with a little ledge and slots for pipes.

I cannot even imagine how you were able to leave ANY of those sewing baskets behind. I would have wanted all of them. I do need to remember that there needs to be space for people in my house.
The halloween applique is just wonderful, I love it!
